Kurbis curiosities: Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Fest
"Basic" girls behold: THE largest pumpkin festival in the world!
Is the thought of eating everything pumpkin appealing to you? Do you have the desire to know how it feels to be surrounded by 300,000+ pumpkins? Do you want to see an one thousand kilo kurbis? Do you need a cute backdrop for your next Instagram post? How about expertly manicured gardens lined with vibrant florals, leading to an elegant European palace? Yeah, that will probably do the trick. All of this, and more gourd themed goodness can be yours in Ludwigsburg, Germany!
All "basic-ness" aside, the Kürbisausstellung Ludwigsburg (AKA Pumpkin Fest) is a treat for the whole family! Unique, entertaining, scenic, tasty, and budget friendly. There's plenty of activities if you have kiddos, and many lovely gardens to stroll with a beverage if you're kid-free. As someone who falls into the latter category, we like to dine on pumpkin delicacies and then grab a beer or kurbissecco (pumpkin prosecco) for our afternoon walk through the park.
For the little ones there is a mini petting zoo, canal with boats, Rapunzel's tower, or a jump in the haystack house. With that kind of line up, your bundles of joy are sure to sleep through the ride home!
Pumpkin soup, pumpkin burgers, pumpkin fries! Cakes, sausages and drinks all of the kurbis kind await you and your empty belly. After two consecutive years of savory samples, our favorite is a seasonal twist on the traditional Schwäbisch dish, maultaschen. If tender pasta wrapped around finely minced meats and pumpkin, then simmered in savory pumpkin soup sounds good to you, you've come to the right place! And don't skimp on the roasted pumpkin seeds sprinkled on top, lady. Danke schön!
Expertly carved pumpkin art and sky-high pumpkin sculptures please the eye. Each year, the fest takes on a new theme. In 2015, the theme was "Pumpkins Taking Flight", and 2016's theme is "The Pumpkin Circus is Coming to Town". Kürbisausstellung generally runs from early September to early November, with different activities planned each weekend: pumpkin weighing, pumpkin canoeing, and on the last weekend pumpkin smashing, just to name a few. I can't wait to see what crazy, captivating theme the organizers come up with next year!
