Basic blogger alert, I am going to drop a quote on you...
"Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone"
John Steinbeck in his article for Harper’s Bazaar, after visiting the enchanting enclave of Positano. Um ok, John Steinbeck- hit me right in the feels, why don't ya? But if you've ever been subjected to the post-Positano blues as you're boarding your flight home, you know what I am talking about. And if you haven't, add the Almafi Coast to your bucketlist, go, and then let me know.
I have always favored coastal locations for my vacation spots, but now that I'm living in a land-locked area, my lust for the sea is exasperated. With a rocky coastline and a cardio workout to get around here, you have to work for it- but it's completely worth it! Also, seafood. Like I am talking fresh enough that it might still move at your table. True story: we told our waiter that our shrimp was still moving at dinner one night and his response?
"Of course. It is fresh."
Oh, ok.. just making sure. PS, it was delicious.
Vertically stacked buildings that appear from the sky and ascend to the coastline. In my 20+ countries so far, there's been nothing like it, and I'm not sure if there ever will be.
Can we acknowledge the obvious that Positano is an Instagrammer's dream? Just wandering the streets you will find charming and whimsical nooks and crannies just waiting to be captured...
Positano is one of those places that invite you to take a deep breath and pause for a moment. It's the Italian way of life, and seems to be a world away from the hustle and bustle of Naples. You can peruse the many small galleries filled with local paintings and ceramic goods then shop for handmade leather goods, especially their prized bejeweled sandals.
Take in the narrow, winding streets lined with cozy cafes, prime for daydreaming and people watching. All those chic patrons sipping espressos or cocktails. Speaking of those cocktails... Have you ever had an Aperol Spritz? I am all about doing as the locals do, especially when it comes to a cocktail, honey!
It is a popular Italian aperitif, and really refreshing but complex with flavors of citrus and herbs, paired with the effervescence of bubbly. And in case you can't just snag a quick flight to Italy to test one out, here's the recipe:
Ingredients: 2 oz Prosecco, 1 1/4 oz Aperol, splash of soda water
Prep: Build into glass over ice, garnish with an orange wedge, stir and serve.
Throw together a Caprese salad with Buffalo Mozzarella and you've got yourself the next best thing to an Amalfi beach buzz!
If you've had your fill of shopping and sipping (as if there is such a thing) you can hike the Path of the Gods, which connects a few towns along the Amalfi Coast. If you're worried about fitness levels, know that the hike can vary depending on where you start and end. Most will say begin in Agerola (Boomerano is your bus stop) and then hike in the direction of Positano.
A gorgeous day for a hike in Italy!
Know before you go:
When it comes to lodging, anything high on a hill is going to offer you killer views but also a killer quad workout with A LOT of steps. Check Google maps with the satellite option and ask the hotel specifically about accessibility and stairs if you have mobility issues.
The word "prego" (pray-go) is very multi-purpose in Italy. You may hear your waiter say Prego as he waves an arm for you to sit at your table. In this context it means please sit. You may hear "prego" as you step up for your turn in line. In this context it means how can I help you? It's also used for you're welcome, and pardon. You will hear it a ton!
Don't be afraid to pack a pop of color here! The buildings and town is colorful, so you'll fit right in.
Save a little room in your suitcase for a pair of fabulous custom sandals.
The beaches are pebble not sand, so bring beach shoes.
Get ready to fall in love with Positano!
